Things I’ve notice about Nancy Drew Games
1) In Shadow at the Water’s Edge, Nancy gets locked in a room. To get out she has to replace colored pieces of what I am assuming is glass. This is a timed puzzle, so if you don’t complete it in the allotted time, “Nancy” gets knocked in the head with a piece of wood. Here ae my questions. 1) Why doesn’t Nancy look up see the piece of wood, and use it to break the door. 2) Nancy barely touched the door in her room earlier and it tore, so why doesn’t this one do the same. 3) Who or what is making the room shake?
2) In Secret of Shadow Ranch, we can see cows in the background, and there is the pink cow food. So when Nancy has to feed everything, why not the cows too? Who feeds the cows? Tex? Dave?
3) Speaking of Dave, what does he do all day, with one exception, all you see Dave do is stand looking at the chickens? He doesn’t even fix the coop, Nancy has to do that.
4) In Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, Nancy spends the first part of the game finding Lori. Later in the game it is revealed how Lori pulled her vanishing act. 1) Why didn’t Nancy start looking for her, by looking around the area from where she vanished? 2) I understand why Charlena isn’t concerned about Lori’s disappearance but the others who claim to be looking are doing nothing. Hey Hardy Boys, you’re not going to find her by looking at those old books. You’re supposed to be ace detectives, get with the program.
5) Here is a spoiler of sorts-In the Final Scene, when you hear the kidnapper; you can tell who the kidnapper is. Maybe not if you are playing it for the first time, but if not listen closely, it is very obvious.
6) In Danger on Deception Island, at the Hot Kettle Café, Jenna offers you clam chowder, but you can also get a blueberry muffin. However if you chose the chowder first, the muffin option goes away, but if you chose the muffin first, you get to choose both for the rest of the game. At least this has been my experience.
7) Why doesn’t Nancy eat in White Wolf of Icicle Creek? She cooks for everyone else but never fixes herself anything. No wonder she has really weird dreams.

Here is something I’ve noticed recently about the ND game “Alibi in Ashes.”  Nancy only talks to Ned on the phone.  After she gets out of jail, she talks to Bess, George and even  Deidra, but not Ned.  So what happened to Ned?  Yes I know it’s only a game, but I just found it to be odd. ned

Well the latest came is officially out, well it is you get it download.  Everyone else will just have to wait a few days for their copy to arrive.  Um, no I haven’t played it yet,  but it is downloading.  About my challenge to play all the games (in abc order) before the new one came out…. well I didn’t quit make it,  I got to Trail of the Twister.  Most games I could probably “sail” right through, except for a few things.   Sewing the dress in  Secret of the Old Clock, (which is bad enough on Junior mode, but horrible on Senior mode.) Sailing around to find the islands and then diving, and searching to find the chest, and keeping your metal detector on the spot in Ransom of the Seven Ships ( oh and don’t get me started on the monkey’s.).. then there’s…. OK I’d better stop before I start channeling Quigly.

Currently I’m playing Nancy Drew The Deadly Device.   According to my reasons for disliking other games, I shouldn’t like this one, after all Nancy never leaves the building.  But I do.   Maybe it’s because the graphics are better, or because each area/room has a different feel or vibe to it.  I do find it interesting that Nancy is a total klutz in the dark.  Funny thing about that is I can see where she’s going, but apparently she can’t.

I have three favorite “parts” of the game so far.

1) The Dancing Pigeon in the Nikko’s office.   Oh, I’d like to thank Michael Gray aka Arglefrumph  for his dancing pigeon song, because now it’s stuck in my head and probably will be for the rest of the game. Thank you Michael!

2) Messing up Mason’s desk.

3) The funny things that Nancy says while she’s in the bathroom.

Ok, I have to admit but Curse of Blackmoor Manor is growing on me.  I doubt that I’ll ever consider it to be one of my top favorites, but I am liking it more.   The moving rooms are  easier to go through now, since I figured out the system.

Now on to the San Juan Islands and “Danger on Deception Island”.   This game is one of favorites, mainly because it makes me want to visit the islands.    I’ve noticed that the game features a lot of things that some can do in real life, while visiting the islands.

What’s up with Ethel?  Seriously she is the creepiest character in the game.   She shows up out of nowhere,  knows way to much about the family to be not related, and she likes to put on weird headpieces and walk around the manor at night chanting, and pouring oil down drains.

Lulu the Parrot.  I prefer Lulu’s grandchild in Ransom of the Seven Ships.  Not that I have anything against Lulu, mind you, but in this game Lulu is kept in a cage, under a sheet all the time.  I understand covering it a night, but couldn’t the let Lulu have some “daylight” ever now and then.

Parisian Map from Nancy Drew Danger By Design

Parisian Map from Nancy Drew Danger By Design

I haven’t done an update for my Nancy Drew Marathon.  I’m playing the games in abc order, or trying to.  I started playing Creature of Kapu Cave.  I was really proud of myself, because I hadn’t had to look at my notes or use a walkthrough.   Anyway I got up to the part where Nancy is “dialing” the radio to talk to Quigly and the game suddenly started freezing.  So (after about 3 tries) I decided to go on the  Danger By Design.

Danger By Design is one of those games, that I don’t “hate/dislike” but it’s not one of my favorites.   But it would be nice if you could really develop film by flushing the toilet.  I do like that there is a lot of Paris culture, and that it’s not the sterotypical Eiffel Tower Tourist culture.

I would say that I’m probably the only one who has ever done this but I’m pretty sure I’m not.  I made chocolate chip cookies using the game recipe.  I used the fresh mint, but the edges didn’t curl up.  I don’t know if that’s just something in the game,  or if they are really supposed to curl up.

As soon as I’m finished playing Danger by Design, it’s on to Deception Island.

I can’t decide if I like this game or not.  On one hand Nancy spends her time stuck in the same building throughout the entire game.  On the other there are a lot of plot twists.   It’s more or less a game that I like but can’t explain why.

So what do I like about it:  Hmm…there is a secret room,  a game that if I get tired of playing the “Game” I can go play.  There is a variety of puzzles, some hard, and some easy.  The culprit was a surprise (well the first time I played the game). The graphics are better.  Phone charms, need I say more.

What I don’t like:  You can’t fast forward over lengthy conversations.  Ned’s texting,  sorry Ned fans but I find him or rather his text messages annoying.  You can’t get a good look at certain areas of the building, but then again that’s one of my pet peeves in nearly every game.

Ok, most games where Nancy is stuck in the same building (ahem  “The Final Scene”) I find to be rather boring.  But this one,  may it’s the graphics and the each room/area of the building has a different feel to it.   The room don’t all have the same colors, and decor, there is a difference.

so my overall score  somewhere between a B+ and a  A-

Danger on Deception Island Review Part 1

Computer Games, Danger on Deception Island, Her Interactive, Nancy Drew, San Juan Islands

Plot:  Nancy arrives on Deception Island one of the San Juan Islands in Washington State, for some well deserved R and R.  But the vacation turns into a mystery from the very start.  Katie Firestone, Nancy’s host is a marine biologist who also does whale watching tours on her boat.  No sooner does Nancy arrive than they discover Katie’s boat has been sabotaged, and so begins the mystery.

As always there are multiple mysteries to solve here.  One is naturally Katie’s boat  Another is the strange messages found in bottles floating in the harbor,  and another would be the mysterious thefts that occurred in town.

Characters:  Jenna Deblin:  I liked Jenna.  She didn’t seem as stiff as some characters.  Here’s a tip,  When Nancy gets a choice between the clam chowder and a blueberry muffin,  choose the blueberry muffin the first time.  Then you’ll always get a choice of the two.  Well it did that for me.

Holt Scotto: Holt is a fisherman, born and bred, and is running for Harbor Master.  Holt may come off as gruff, but he obviously has everyone’s best interest in mine.

Andy Jason:  Andy, well Andy is not my favorite character.  The “Whale’s Rule” bit I found annoying.  And well let’s say I found him suspicious from the start.

Games, Puzzles and Chores:  There are “chores” in this game, but unlike other games where they have to be done over and over,  here you do them once and you’re done.   The puzzles are pretty easy, compared to some of the games.  To me the hardest part of the game was going from Katie’s boat to the island.  If you have the same problem I suggest using a walk through, for that part, or if you  keep getting lost in the underground caves.  (UHS hints is wonderful because it only tells you what you need to know).
